Entry Title and Organization: Bark in the Park Showcase – “It’s Pawty Time!”, WRAT
Award Received: Gold
Challenges: Weather! It’s an outdoor event. Also, there was another event on the same day one county over but that didn’t seem to hamper anyone or too many other shelters from coming to our event.
Description: Lakewood Blueclaws hold a “Bring your dog to the game day” at the park once a year. Our Company teamed up with them to hold “Bark in the Park” outside the stadium three hours prior to the game. Bark in the Park is an opportunity for people to bring their dogs, browse through vendors and take part in some of the various Doggie games we conducted for prizes. On top of all that, Shelters from all over Monmouth and Ocean County along with surrounding counties were invited to set up a 10 x 10 booth space in efforts to find homes for some of their dogs. Each of them were asked to designate two dogs to take part in our Doggie adoption Showcase and walk their dogs down the “Dogwalk” fashion-show style as our DJ’s read that dogs bio to the crowd. We also had a dog talent show called “America’s got Tail-ent” and a Doggie Kissing contest (the dog that kisses it’s owner for the longest period of time). The event also consisted of a hired pooper scooper company, a doggy oasis (kiddie pool with water for either drinking or cooling off), Pictures with your pet,
Strategy: Our strategy was to help sheltered dogs find good homes in the most fun way possible. The marriage of our event with the “Bring your Dog to the Game Day event that Blueclaws also had was a no brainer. Utilize our own air-waves along with print, our web-site, social media and reaching out to our database segmented by dog lovers made for a successful marketing mix..
Tactic: We ran ads in the Asbury Park Press and Greater Media Newspapers, we provided flyers for the shelters to hand out, posted on Facebook along with promoting the event at the Ball Park and on WRAT and WJRZ. Our sponsors, Seaview Orthopaedic and J&K Pet Depot also promoted the event. The event was set up in such a way that it’s easy to walk around with Dogs and provided enough “green space” on the lawn to roam around with your dog, lounge on the grass etc. It was also the place we ran our contests and the Dog Adoption Showcase.
Results: The event had over 30 vendors and adoption agencies, we had approximately 1500 attendees and dogs pre-game and approximately 22 dogs were adopted that day, including a brother and sister Lab/Boxer mix by our own Morning Show Co-Host, Carl Craft. We had sponsors that made the event profitable for the radio station while doing good for the community and some of our needy four legged friends.
