Entry Category: Print Material, Magazine (internal or external)
Entry Title and Organization: Columns Magazine, Ranney School
Award Received: Gold
Challenges: Because of the special nature of the publication’s focus, which was meant to be presented as a surprise to the Head of School as he neared his retirement date, the team had to work unconventionally to secure anecdotes and photographs going back two decades regarding the school and its leader’s historical milestones without the Headmaster’s direct involvement.
Description: Our school’s Communications Team, in coordination with faculty, administrators, alumni, and community leaders, produced a 60-page commemorative print and digital edition of the school’s flagship publication, Columns, in the winter of 2013. The special issue takes a retrospective look at the school’s strategic history and provides
momentous reflections of the school’s headmaster, Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff, and his 20 years of service to the school. Dr. Sykoff retired at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. The issue features a six-panel pullout timeline that highlights key events over the school’s past 20 years. The digital version of Columns includes complementary video clips that expand upon the print content as well as a blog that captures personal messages from families, alumni, students and community leaders directed to Dr. Sykoff. Strategy: The creation of this special edition began nine months before its publication and involved monthly brainstorming sessions among the school’s Communications and Marketing staff, faculty and administrators, and current families to create the best possible outline and display for Columns. The publication is divided into five core sections based on the issue’s theme and the readership’s myriad interests: Strategy & Teaching Philosophy; Development; Athletics; Leadership & Mission-Promise; Students & Alumni; and Celebration & Commemoration. The Columns team made a concerted effort to connect the digital version to the print version through the use of a QR code, an online box on the Table of Contents, and various “online bonus” text boxes on article pages. We also produced original vidcasts to complement the printed content and embedded those videos into the online version.
Tactic: To further bolster the commemorative edition, the publication features a redesign including new fonts, an updated color pallet, larger and bolder photographs, higher quality paper stock and more entry points for print and online viewers. Through the proofing stages, Columns had two full-time editors, internal staff reviews of specific divisional content as well as a third-party copyeditor to ensure the most accurate and fine-tuned content.
Results: The end result is not only a school magazine, but a marketing tool, a historical document and a publication that can be read and enjoyed year after year for those who wish to remember and reminisce about the school’s great history. As the school embarks on its next journey, this edition of Columns serves to capture a moment in time of the school’s presence in the New Jersey community and the larger world of stellar independent education.
