Entry Title and Organization: Prevention First Spring/Summer Newsletter, Prevention First
Award Received: Silver
Challenges: The most challenging part of the Spring/Summer Newsletter was addressing the sometimes-sensitive issue of underage drinking. We wanted to inform parents of best-practices for talking to their children about this topic, but we did not want to tell them that their own parenting techniques are incorrect. We also wanted to ensure that the information we provided was accurate and consistent with the agency’s in-class programs to ensure one strong message was being conveyed
through all of the agency’s channels.
Description: Bi-annual newsletter focusing on an important topic and updating recipients on current information within the organization.
Strategy: Prevention First’s Spring/Summer Newsletter was designed to update the agency’s donors and other supporters with information on recent events happening within the agency and to give special attention to the topic of underage drinking.
Tactic: The newsletter provided a brief article on the success of the 2013 gala, the agency’s Gold JASPER award-winning Television/Video – Infomercial and/or Promotion Product & Tradeshow video, the agency’s involvement with the Medicine Abuse Project and the agency’s Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking that was organized in December of 2012. Also, the newsletter provided statistics on underage drinking and guidelines for parents on how to talk to their children about the issue. In the introductory letter, special attention was given to prom season, which was a timely subject for the beginning of Spring and Summer.
Results: The newsletter was printed and distributed to over 1,000 individuals and was posted on the website and Facebook page as a “flipbook” and also emailed to the agency’s list of over 6,000 recipients. The email alone was opened by 947 people.
